TWENTY THIRD

Tito Sebbe sent me the revisions I had to make in my paper and attached the references I need to cite to strengthen my arguments. After replying to his email, a notification of a new email popped out. The email was from Kerstin. I got an eerie feeling and my fingertips began sweating as I hovered over the icon to click it open.

Hej Laura,

It’s me, Kerstin. I just wanted to invite you to join our department’s art exhibit after summer break. I know you are fantastic at painting. Hope you could take part! Have a great day! <3

By the way, Luke was asking if I could give him your number. I said I needed to ask your consent for it so, would it be okay? Let me know! Thanks.

Kerstin

She didn’t know my new number. No one back home did. Besides, I didn’t want to trust her words. She had already failed me multiple times. Trusting her again would not make any difference, rather than lead to another stupid mistake. But I told her I would think about her proposal over summer and she replied with the same question about Luke. I didn’t reply.

Downstairs, Joyce busied herself with her new hobby, gardening.

“Will you go to town today, Laura?” she said, her gaze locked on her plants.

I ambled towards her but flumped on the couch. “Yes, and I need to revise my paper. I also need to buy mamma some flowers for her birthday tomorrow. Will probably just send them through the post office. What time will you go to work?”

She glanced at me and placed the watering can down. She’s fully made up and I envy her for having the courage to wear that crimson lip shade any time of the day. Chestnut hair color was her theme this time, to signify her support for change and my time of healing. I remember she wanted to have a pixie but doubted, because her round face would become too overwhelming. Any style suits her, in my opinion.

“Around noon? They asked me to take the late shift today. I wish I could finally see the hedge with you, but unfortunately, I need to prioritize some adulting tasks. You know, even if I hate adulting in general.”

I snorted. “Hey, don’t worry about it. We have two months to visit it together. By the way, can you write your message in the letter I will send to mamma today? I will also buy her some nice flowers in the market.”

“Oh, that’s so lovely, Law! Teach my future daughter those little nothings, ‘kay?” She laughed at herself. “I bet tita Raine will love them! Let me just get my lucky pen so I can sign my autograph.” She ambled towards the refrigerator, took the lemonade can and twisted, facing my direction. “Hey, can I also ask you a favor?”

“Of course.”

“Will you kindly buy me some potted daisies when you visit the hedge? I badly need some color in my garden.”

“Okay.” I said, moving towards her in the dining area.
